How to - Earn Money Blogging

"If you're good at something, never do it for free" - The Joker, Batman
Last night there was a great twitter chat by @bloggerforums for #socialbloggers (on every Saturday 6-7pm). The topic for last night was on how to earn money through blogging. It was a fab topic as it is a common misconception that bloggers get very rich, very easily, from what they do. Sadly blogging is not a get rich quick scheme but it is possible to get a little back from it.

The first question of the night was:

From this I said how I've earned some from advertising and affiliate programmes and I had a great response from this:

So, due to popular demand here are the ways I've found best to earn money from blogging. If you would like to see a list of the brand's I've worked with and those that I am an affiliate for, you can find it on my PR page HERE.

Adsense:
This is one of the easiest ways to earn money at the beginning. You will probably find the option on your blog edit page (I know there is with Blogger) but if you can't find it just search 'Google Adsense' (not 'Google Adwords'!). Here you can apply to show google's banner ads on your blog. You have to be approved but I think it's more about checking your blog is real and not showing anything illegal, so you need very little content and it of course don't look at followers etc. therefore it's a good one to start off with.

Thankfully, the ads will not make your blog/website look tacky! When you add the banners to your page the example looks really bad and it can be off putting but Google have made them look really good now and they create ads your viewers want to see.

It works by giving you a set amount per click. This sounds great but it's only pennies so it takes a while to add up. Furthermore, they have a very large threshold before they pay out. In the whole year I've only earned around 80p or something silly and the threshold is £60...so you really won't be seeing that for a long time! Having said that, I'd still recommend it, particularly to new bloggers. It's great at the beginning to have that feeling that you're earning at least something before you're big enough to earn real money with affiliate programmes. Plus, if you position them well and have a few you'll probably do better than me so don't be completely disheartened.

Affiliate programmes:
An affiliate programme is where you work with specific companies and are given links such as banner ads to drive traffic to their site. They track the amount of clicks you get so you can see which ones work well, where and when, and they also track how much is bought by the people you sent over. Most of all, you earn commission on this. Some are nice and let you earn from the amount of clicks like Adsense but most just give a percentage of what a customer bought after coming to them from your site. The percentage is at the company's discretion so it could be a lot or it could be a little, there's no set amount. But they do usually have a '30 day cookie policy' that means that even if they don't buy something on the site straight after coming from your blog, it doesn't matter, as long as they buy something within 30 days.

This works best if you blog about things, such as a fashion blogger or beauty blogger, rather than just your thoughts, but even if you just have a general chat on your blog there may be companies you could work with. I say that because as well as having banners they can also give you specific links etc. that can also be tracked and earn you commission, therefore if you want to talk about specific products you can link directly to them as well and earn if they buy the product or anything else from the brand's site.

You cannot apply straight after creating your blog, they need you to have enough content to check you're real and fit their brand's image. Also, I waited a year before I started applying because you need to have a following base. Even after a year and the following I have, I was not accepted by one brand solely because I didn't have a large enough following, so some companies are very particular.

If you think you have a reasonable collective following (blog, bloglovin, social media, etc. combined) and want to sign up to work with brands there are many ways to go about it.
First, go to your favourite sites and scroll to the bottom of the page. They often have options to find out about shipping costs and working with them etc. and one of the options may be 'Affiliates'. This is where you can find out that company's specific affiliate scheme. For example, I'm an affiliate with Amazon from this option (though they call it Associates, but it's the same thing).
Some companies work one to one with their affiliates and you can apply to work with them directly from the aforementioned option. However others work through an agency. This may be mentioned on their 'Affiliates' page on their website or it might mean that the page is not on their website at all, so do not worry if you cannot see an affiliate option on the website of your dream brand to work with.

Rakuten Linkshare and Affiliate Window are the two agencies I know of. You have to apply to be an affiliate with them first and once approved you can apply to work with the companies you want on their listings. You will be absolutely amazed at the amount of companies they work with so you'll be really spoilt for choice. Affiliate Window ask for a £5 deposit when you sign up just to make sure you're a real person etc. but it's totally safe and you get it straight back. Not only can you apply to work with them but brands are able to see your profile and apply to work with you too if they think you fit their brand. The prestigious brand Baukjen applied to work with me through this for example.
From working with brands through this you receive regular e-mails about the latest deals they're offering or going to offer, as well as lots of specific affiliate offers and extras, such as invites to events. It really helps build a closer relationship with the brands you want to promote.

Advertising:
Another option is offering advertising space on your blog to other bloggers but maybe to small businesses etc. too. This is where you allocate a set amount, whether it be a square, rectangle or long banner to that person/business. This can work really well for helping smaller bloggers get more exposure so it has a real 'feel good' factor to it too. You can just show their "blog button" or maybe their own advert creation.
This can also work really well if you want to run a giveaway but are struggling about what to give as a prize. I offered this in my very first giveaway and it went down really well.

This is completely up to you how you do this and what you charge. Corinne from @bloggerforums recommends calculating it as £1 per every 1000 month views but there is no formal requirements or rules so if you feel the advert space is worth more or less then that's up to you and you have the freedom to choose, particularly if you're offering more than one size or offering extras. Just remember, you have to price it low enough for people to actually want to pay, don't price yourself out of the market.
If your space is selling out fast and there is a lot of demand to be on your site then you can shift to basing it more on the business construct of "supply and demand".

It's also up to you how you get payment but the general consensus and probably safest way is with Paypal. Whether you send an invoice to them or they just send the set amount to your account.
Plus, using Paypal solves this problem as it can convert the currencies for you.

Sally from @makeupdirectory has some great ideas here! You could offer '#FF' twitter posts on Fridays, collaboration posts or guest posts etc. as other advertising options or included in you advertising packages to build up a better, mutually rewarding relationship with them.

Blogger Networks:
I'm a member of e-tailPR, the Next Blogger Network and the Blogger Programme these are similar to affiliate agencies because they work with brands and bloggers but it is aimed at bloggers specifically and has extras such as competitions. It is really worth applying to these as getting approval can look good on your blog and connect you with brands, however you won't earn a huge amount from these either as they are very strict on who can work with which brands, often requiring a huge amount of followers.

Sponsorship:
A company may want to work with you for a specific post. Even though they're unlikely to actually pay you, they may send you an item to review/write about and/or give you something you can use as a prize in a giveaway. Even though you're not exactly earning money this way, it certainly saves you money. If you have a good social media presence then these brands will find and approach you. Therefore, again, you won't be receiving freebies straight away, you need good views and amount of following so don't be surprised if after the first 6 months you still haven't heard from anyone, you will eventually.

Sales:
You could also sell items, whether they be your unwanted samples or just clearing out your wardrobe. Particularly if you've written a post about that item where you've shown off all it's best qualities! You can sell your items through your blog by writing a post on all the items available and asking them to comment or message you for purchase with paypal, create a page on your website such as I have done HERE or sell through a great new app called Depop as I am HERE (or search @sweetheartfashion on your Depop app). This isn't a quick money earner either, people won't rush to buy your stuff, but you may be able to sell a few things and earn a little this way.

Design:
If you're a dab hand at HTML coding or are an artist, then this could really be for you. My blog (http://sweetheartfashionx.blogspot.co.uk) and my blog's website (www.sweetheartfashion.co.uk) were both made by me (I am currently designing websites for a blogger friend and a company, if you have any questions or like my work and would like me to design something for you, please feel free to e-mail me info@sweetheartfashion.com or contact me HERE).
Depending on your skill level or if you have any formal qualifications, you could charge to create blogger templates or website designs for people. I've seen some blogger templates go for around £30 and blog website designs for at least £50! And for custom designs this would be even more!
If however you can just draw etc. you could sell art work for people's blogs, such as headers, social media buttons, borders or backgrounds etc.. The pricing of these are totally dependent on the artist's wishes but again custom designs could cost a lot more so it's up to you how you price your art.

Overall, the main things you need to earn money from blogging is time and good content. If you create good quality posts people like to read and stick with it, eventually you'll get more and more recognised and money will come your way. So don't give up! Blog as a hobby, for enjoyment and view any money as a bonus.

This is not an exhaustive list, there are many different options out there, these are just my tips from my experiences and are the best ways I've come across. I know there are more out there so if you know of any other ways I've not mentioned, please comment what you find works for you!
How do you earn money?
I hope this helps you!

OOTD - Zara Crochet Skort

Sweetheart Fashion Zara Crochet Skort
Sunglasses - Gucci
Cami - New Look
Skirt - Zara
Shoes - Accessorize UK
I thought the sun had totally left for August but I was blessed with one more gloriously sunning day and so I thought I'd chuck on my favourite summer purchase, Zara's SS'14 crochet skort. Skorts are a fabulous idea, especially for sports or windy weather! I always struggle to find shorts that are small or thin enough to go under my mini skirts. This is a little different on the design, it looks like a cute skirt at the front but from the back and under the fold at the front it looks like shorts.

It's a fabulous summer addition! The fabric is a great thickness, light and airy for hot summer days whilst not being see-through so you don't need to worry about any embarrassing moments. I coupled this with just a casual tank top from New Look. I chose a plain design so that the detail on the skort would stand out but with a stunning skort like this you can get away with wearing a bright top like I have here or a pastel colour.

The detailing's so beautiful too and its great that the flower design goes beyond the skirt. The skirt's also perfect to wear on the beach! I wore it to the beach this summer and the colour and fabric doesn't show up the sand if you get any on you and it's fab to slip on and off over your bikini.

Do you love skorts too?

Buy My Wardrobe

Sweetheart Fashion River Island Floral Dress
Dress - River Island
I've seen lots of bloggers do a 'blog sale' and it always appears to go well. It's great when you can buy something that was featured in someone's blog or has had a positive review from them. Usually it's unwanted or unused samples so I wasn't keen to call this a blog sale, these are not left over samples, instead I wanted to show you my clothes (and some jewellery) that I currently have for sale that are either unused and unworn or well loved and looking for new homes.

Sweetheart Fashion AX Paris Floral Dress
Dress - AX Paris
The AX Paris dress above is one I won a modelling competition in and extremely flattering on, very slimming; whilst the River Island halter-neck below and the River Island puff-ball dress at the top I've never worn but would look chic and stunning on anyone! I'm selling a range of high-street brands at amazing prices because they all really need to go soon.

I move around a lot and so am unable to hold onto clothes that I'm simply not going to wear again or know I'm unlikely to get enough use out of...and I need to fund my travels! As above, the majority of the clothes I'm putting up for sale are unused or used only once and so are like new and come from a very clean, smoke free home. I've put on this post a small selection of my favourite pieces, if you check out my Depop page (HERE or link on the side bar or search @sweetheartfashion on your Depop app) you'll be able to find all the items available and most items are available on my shop on my website (HERE).

Items are updated regularly so keep checking back!
If you're interested in any of my items, you can buy them safely through Paypal through the app, or please feel free to message me on my social media, fill in the contact form on my website or e-mail me (info@sweetheartfashion.com).

I would love to hear your thoughts. Do you sell your clothes?

OOTD - Summer Chic Workwear

Sweetheart Fashion Chic White Skinny Jeans Floral Shirt
Sunglasses - Gucci
Shirt - River Island
Clutch - Ted Baker
Jeans - Primark
Shoes - Zara

Today I'm working really hard and so thought I'd wear a sophisticated but fun, summer work wear outfit. I chose these hot white jeans for a brighter look. I wasn't sure if white skinny jeans would suit me so I bought some cheap ones from Primark to give them a test run first. However I'm really impressed how they've turned out!  They really go with anything and look super chic! I'll definitely be buying some better quality ones from my usual brands. This AW'14, ripped jeans are all the rage and I'm already beginning to see them everywhere so I may practise some DIY ripping on these.

I wore these with this stunning top from River Island's SS'14 collection. It's one size too big for me to give the baggy boyfriend shirt effect and therefore be light and airy for summer. As you've probably already guessed by my huge Ted Baker obsession, I'm a massive florals fan and the more bright, colourful and realistic the better. This top is no exception and almost looks like it could have been part of Ted Baker's fabulous collections. I love how the flowers don't cover the whole shirt, having the predominantly white showing makes it more subtle and less overpowering effect. I also love the range of rich colours in the flowers. You could pick out any of them to accentuate and go with any accessory or outfit.

I completed the look with my fabulous Ted Baker iPad cases, which also works as a chic oversized clutch. I am working a lot off my iPad today and I need to keep it protested. I have the Apple magnetic Smart Cover to protect the screen but I wanted something to extra protect it when it's in my handbag. Plus, often I won't need everything else and don't require a whole bag, therefore it's great to just carry this around instead. I wish I could have bought all the styles they had! They had a cream one and a floral one too, they all looked so lush but I thought this would go best with my outfits, particularly as I tend to wear monochrome over winter!

I also wore my new Zara heels. These are by far my favourite, they have such a stunning unique design and are super comfy! Separate blog post about these coming soon.

What summer work wear have you styled this season? Send me your links!

How To ~ Stay Motivated with Fashion Blogging

For the second time in the year that I have been blogging, I've succumb to 'blogging fatigue', 'blogger's guilt', pressure, writers block, whatever you want to call it. Overall, I lost my confidence and desire to blog. Which is why I haven't blogged for most of this month. I've totally bounced back now and am back to my huge love of blogging but I wanted to share with you my thoughts and tips to hopefully help others of you. I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you who continued to visit my blog and leave lovely comments etc. during my absence. It actually really helped and it's great being so supported.

During that time, I woke each morning and found myself feeling down, that I've disappointed each viewer for not having reached their expectation of seeing something new. Then 'fear' they won't return from being 'so let down', particularly if I didn't post for 'too long', and 'fear' the following morning I would awake to a big fat 0 readers.
I often feel pressure that I wouldn't look good enough for the pictures, I haven't worked out and eaten a little too much and feel I look like a whale or don't have a good enough outfit. They're all crazy things that can go through our heads and make us feel inadequate for our blog and sometimes spill over into our real lives.

When I was recommending blogging to a friend she admitted she felt put off because she felt "you have to be very strong" to be a blogger. At first I didn't really understand, let alone agree, with her view. But now I see more what she means.

I've read about many other bloggers who have felt the same and know it's a very common problem. Therefore I wanted to share some tips I put together for myself to keep me on track with a hobby I do enjoy and would be sad to loose, which I hope can help some of you. I've written this with a fashion blog angle but I'm sure you can extrapolate and transfer the skills to whatever type of blog you write.

Top Tips for Staying Motivated:

Pamper yourself
If you're feeling even the slightest bit inadequate, show yourself how much you love you. Go to a spa or a salon for some pampering or DIY it at home or with friends. You'll refreshed, comforted, and more prepared to 'face the music'.
One of the things for me was my hair, I thought it was looking scraggy and untamed as I hadn't had it done in a while so I went to my favourite salon and got the most expensive hair dresser there to work his magic. It took hours and cost a bomb but it's given me such a refreshed feel and more positive outlook for everyday and my blog.
I also treated myself to a facial and pedicure at home to feel extra refreshed. We all need a pamper night now and then!

Make sure you gain your validation from somewhere else in your life
Blogging can become a huge source of accomplishment for us, which is great, but don't let it become everything. Otherwise when things get on top of you or things go wrong they don't effect you as much. Take any criticism as constructively as you can and remember, it's not personal! Most of all though, if there isn't any criticism said, it's honestly not there so don't imagine people are thinking it. You're doing great!
Ensure you gain your confidence and how you define yourself from other things in your life too; a happy family life, a fulfilling relationship, doing well at school/work, mastering a new skill, creating something, there are plenty of possibilities out there.

Get a makeover
Getting a new look for yourself or your blog design might be just the ticket. Give you a fresh outlook or new relationship with your blog.

Buy something new
Retail therapy is a great feel good option. It's not full proof as the novelty can quickly wear off or become a bad habit, but make sure you're not too hard on yourself. You can treat yourself every now and then! Having something new or a whole new outfit to blog about might just give you the inspiration you need to get you kick-started back to blogging.

Change it up
Change where, when or how you take your pictures.
Go out and about and get a picture in a new environment and different picture backgrounds can be really refreshing for you and your blog.
Change the time of day you take the pictures, changes in the amount of lighting and time might help too; you may find that doing it first thing in the morning or after lunch etc. might be better for you.
Ask for help or do it yourself. If you don't already, maybe getting a tripod and taking the pictures in your own time and own way could help give you more confidence to be more adventurous with your shots.
Or, if you already do this, maybe ask a friend to take some pictures of you. You can make it a really fun experience and build a better relationship with them. If you have a friend doing a photography course, or ask someone who is, as it would be great experience for them, they will be more than happy to help!

Take a Blog holiday
Don't be afraid to take a break! If you treat this as a job you deserve a holiday every now and then. Don't blog or even think about your blog for a week, two... three... however long it takes! Release the pressure on yourself and remind yourself that you blog when it makes you happy. Get yourself grounded and refreshed again and you'll be raring to start.
Get out and about too. Visiting places can make you feel a lot better and be great inspiration.
And remember, you don't need to apologise! If you loose one or two followers that's they're loss. Take as much time as you need so that when you come back you'll gain lots rather than struggle on with just those few. It's your blog and your life. You don't have to answer to anyone.

Write a list of what makes you happy
If you love these things there are bound to be others that feel the same way and therefore these could be great inspirational tips for your blog. Make sure you remind yourself of what makes you feel happy and writing about things that do.

Exercise
Funnily enough it will work. We all know it releases endorphins (the happy chemical in our brain) so it will physically make you happier and reduce depression, plus feeling pumped, refreshed and toned will certainly boost your confidence about yourself and get you ready to go back in front of the camera.

I hope these tips can helped you.

Have you been through similar experiences? What are your top tips?

xoxo

Last Summer Sun OOTD - Missguided Floral Trousers

Sunglasses - Gucci
Top -  Rinascimento
Trousers - Missguided
Shoes - Accessorize UK

For me the weather has been pretty awful this month, as if winter has come already in August! Today I have a little bit of sun so I thought I'd wear some bright colours to totally brighten my day and show you my new trousers from Missguided. These are definitely a new summer favourite and I'd have worn them sooner if the summer hadn't left me already! In all honesty I have never bought trousers from Missguided before but I will definitely be buying some more! I'm really impressed with the quality and fit. These cigarette pants are made of a soft/silky material and it's a stretchy too so it's really comfortable to wear all day and to anything.

Sunglasses - Gucci
Top -  Rinascimento
Trousers - Missguided
Shoes - Accessorize UK

I adore the bright colours and pattern! This SS'14 has been all about big bold colours and prints and Missguided's summer collection was no exception. It's unusual to see a floral print so large but I think it should totally be used much more, it makes the piece pop and I believe gives it more depth too. If you haven't tried such a bold print yourself I highly recommend taking the plunge and trying this trend, even for autumn! Brighten up your wintry days.

Sunglasses - Gucci
Top -  Rinascimento
Trousers - Missguided
Shoes - Accessorize UK

I coupled this with my favourite lace top; with a pattern as bright as this on the trousers, having a solid and neutral colour on top is a must to make the trousers a real featured piece and stand out. I also chose my comfortable tan flats from Accessorize UK, to again have neural tones and further highlight the trousers. I also wore neural make-up with a splash of colour on my lips to match the trousers and wore my hair in casual natural waves.

Would you/do you wear such a bold print?

Even though it's still only August, the weather where I am is certainly making it feel like autumn's already here, where's the sun gone? But with the release of new AW'14 collections, it certainly brightens my gloomy days and gives me something to look forward to.

Today Missguided  released their exciting new AW'14 preview and here are my top 10 favourite pieces. I struggled (as always!) to pick just 10; all of them look great!
Plus, apart from the biker jeans, the items on my list are all under £20, which really fabulous prices especially with their 10% student discount.

There are a lot of chic blacks and whites which I'm looking forward to wearing again but I also love their autumnal floral pieces and for a splash of colour, they've added some pastel coloured pieces to their collection too. Most of all, I love their oxblood coloured items such as the unique chain back jumper. This piece I am definitely buying! Oxblood is such a luxurious and rich colour and ideal for autumn and winter. It also goes well if you want to add a touch of colour to an otherwise monochrome look for a chic but softer style.

Which is your favourite piece?
What are you looking forward to most about AW'14?
